Symposium: Biological Time – From Molecules to Evolution

28–29 September 2026 | Auditorium MareNostrum, Barcelona

The Barcelona Collaboratorium is pleased to announce the symposium "Biological Time: From Molecules to Evolution", taking place on 28–29 September 2026 at the Auditorium MareNostrum in Barcelona.

Time underlies every aspect of biology, from the molecular mechanisms controlling gene expression and development to the evolutionary processes that shape life across generations. Bringing together internationally recognised researchers in developmental biology, chronobiology, biophysics, systems biology, computational oncology, and aging research, the symposium will explore how biological systems measure, respond to, and are constrained by time across multiple scales.

The programme features three thematic sessions:

  • The Beginning of Life

  • Time and Function – Systems in Balance

  • Aging – When Time is Perturbed

In keeping with the collaborative spirit of the Barcelona Collaboratorium, the meeting will combine outstanding scientific presentations with dedicated opportunities for discussion, networking, and interaction between senior scientists and early-career researchers.

A poster session will provide PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with the opportunity to present their work, with selected abstracts invited for short oral presentations.

The deadline for abstract submission is 31 August 2026.

The symposium will be followed by a public event, "Time, Aging and Society: Rethinking Healthy Longevity," organised as part of the cultural programme accompanying the exhibition The Invention of Time at the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona. The discussion will connect current advances in aging research with broader societal questions and will be open to the general public.

We warmly invite researchers, students, and professionals interested in the temporal dimensions of living systems to join us for two days of interdisciplinary science and exchange.
