Aging occurs at multiple spatial scales--functional declines visible in molecules, organelles, cells, tissues, organs and organisms that ultimately cause poor health and death. My research group studies the multi-scale dynamics of aging, and in particular how interventions like drugs or mutations acting on single molecular mechanisms can produce emergent, systemic changes in organismal aging. We combine theory and experiment, applying data analytic and theoretic modelling strategies drawn from statistical physics and complex systems theory with experimental molecular genetics and functional genomics methods development. In the wetlab, we collect new data sets to refine our models, employing a mixture of bulk, single-individual, and single-cell transcriptomics, CRISPR genome editing ( in particular, developing constructs that allow us to precisely modulate aging in vivo ), C. elegans genetics, and high-throughput imaging.
